Yakuza: Like a Dragon is heavily inspired by One Piece, says producer

Since its premiere in the West, Yakuza: Like a Dragon conquered the hearts of thousands of fans. Without a doubt, much of its charm comes from its colorful main characters, who enrich the central plot with emotional, crazy and funny moments. If you’re a die-hard fan of the anime and manga industries, that description might remind you of the starring cast of one piece. In that case, let us tell you that your hunch is correct.

During a recent interview with Crunchyroll News (via Kotaku) during the Tokyo Game Show 2022, Masayoshi Yokoyama, director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and producer of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, confirmed that the exciting adventure of Ichiban Kasuga and company is heavily inspired by the characters in the manga created by Eiichirō Oda.

One Piece was a major influence for Yakuza: Like a Dragon

“I never talked about this, so I’m not sure if I should now, but [Yakuza 7] it was very, very inspired by One Piece. To me, Ichiban is basically Luffy. And around him are Zoro, Nami and the rest of the group, you know? The composition of the One Piece party was on my mind so much during the writing that it was a big influence,” revealed the writer and producer during the interview.

Apparently, the influence went further and permeated the promotional material. What happens is that Masayoshi Yokoyama assured that the slogan “Life is an adventure” of the RPG is inspired by the popular anime of Toei Animation.

“This is definitely not official, but in my heart Yakuza: Like a Dragon it was basically my ideal version of what i would be Yakuza: One Piece. That’s how I got the inspiration to do it!” commented the director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.

The influences of the anime and manga industries do not end here. The producer and screenwriter states that bleachthe work of the mangaka Tite Kubo, served as inspiration to write the dialogue lines of Like a Dragon: Ishin!classic title of the franchise that will arrive for the first time in the West at the beginning of next year with a remake.
